The word you are looking for is “or.” I mean. ..I am pretty sure. As in you can either not eat (clearly a ridiculous notion cause eating is awesome) OR join the gym (duh..logical choice).
You just forgot the “or”…right?
As it reads now you have a numbered list. Like steps. As in the steps you are supposed to take. Step 1. Don’t eat! Hah. Step 2. Join a gym! Step 3. Collapse? No. That can’t be right. Did you mean option 1 and option 2? Maybe. But you didn’t write that. And option 1 is a terrible terrible option.
Still…I can’t possibly fathom that you would put a poster in your front window that implies not eating is an acceptable method of weight loss. That would be offensive and highly ignorant, even if it was meant light heartedly, considering that thousands of people, including many clients you see almost daily, struggle with self image and eating disorders.
I mean, I think I get the joke you were aiming for, but either with or without the or…..it isn’t a funny joke. Making fun of any type of mental or physical illness is a really low blow, especially one that still kills people. Would you put up a poster that said Ways to not gain weight: 1. KILL YOURSELF (HAHAHA SUICIDE) 2. Workout a bit.
Probably not….. so why is it ok to make a joke about this? You could have added one more word to make it a good joke - and it isn’t “or.” Try “dessert.” Ways to not gain weight during the holidays: 1. Don’t eat dessert (but.. but halloween candy? apple pie? nooooo) 2. Join the gym (oh, ok, I’ll do that.. nom nom nom). Because everyone loves eating dessert, so the idea of having to NOT eat dessert, would make people join the gym. Get it? Funny, hah? No one gets hurt. Except the cheesecake.
I’m just going to have to assume you didn’t properly understand the grammar structure you chose and what it implied. ..right? Right. And once got realize how incredibly offensive this comes off…I am sure you will be scrambling to tear these down in shame. Or man, do I hope so.
Seriously though. I think they just didn’t think it through but it still comes off as pretty gross. I am complaining online because the clubs can’t take in house feedback. I urge other members of NYSC or BSC or and SC to do so.
